Solar Terms Defined
Here are a few of the most common solar terms when you get started researching solar panel installation. Some you may know and some you may be learning for the first time! Wherever you are in your research, we hope these definitions help the process of going solar easier!
- Photovoltaic (PV) – Technology that converts sunlight into electricity using solar cells.
- Renewable Energy – Energy from sources that naturally replenish, like the sun, wind, and water.
- Nonrenewable Energy – Energy from finite sources like coal, oil, and natural gas.
- Carbon Footprint – The total greenhouse gas emissions caused by an individual, organization, or product.
- Grid-Tied Solar Systems – Solar power systems connected to the electrical grid, allowing energy exchange.
- Off-Grid System – A solar system that operates independently without a connection to the electrical grid.
- Grid-Tied Solar System with Battery Backup – A grid-connected solar system that includes batteries for energy storage during outages.
- Ground Mounted Solar Systems – Solar panels installed on the ground instead of rooftops, often for large-scale energy production.
- Battery Backup – A system that stores solar energy in batteries for use during power outages.
- EV Charger – A device that charges electric vehicles by converting electrical power.
- Interconnection Agreement – A contract between a solar system owner and the utility company outlining connection terms.
- Net-Metering – A billing system that credits solar energy system owners for excess electricity sent to the grid.
- Turnkey Installation – A complete solar system installation service, from design to activation.
- Inverters – Devices that convert solar panels’ direct current (DC) into usable alternating current (AC) electricity.
